Disclose Locations of License Plate Cameras

The Lexington Police Department is participating in a pilot program to place 25 license plate reader cameras in areas that reportedly have high incidents of violent crime. If the program is continued, each camera will cost the city $2,500 per year.

At the March 15th, 2022 city council work session, LPD was asked about the locations of the cameras. Though they will be placed in public areas, LPD refused to share their locations, stating that releasing this information could alert people who are allegedly engaged in criminal activity, or the cameras could be vandalized. However, in addition to LPD Accountability, the NAACP, ACLU, and Human Rights Commission have expressed concern about the locations of the cameras potentially targeting over-policed, marginalized neigborhoods.

Due to the lack of accountability and transparency from the Lexington Police Department, it is up to the community to identify and map the locations of these public cameras. If a license plate reader camera, such as the one shown in the picture below, is spotted, please let us know in the following form.
